W3 Counter Live Web Stats Service

Posted on by in Blog

It’s important to track your websites growth regularly. I prefer to check stats about once week, anything more than that can be a little overkill unless you are tracking the performance of something specific (e.g. a big article or product release).

Webalizer and AWStats are two of the most common hosting traffic stats programs available whilst Google Analytics and SiteMeter are probably the most used 3rd party traffic stats service on the web. Traffic statistic programs always seem to conflict with each other, which is why most webmasters check their stats using a few different programs. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

One of the 3rd party services I like using is W3 Counter as it provides stats on a lot of things other programs don’t such as who’s currently viewing your site and a FeedBurner and RSS integration.

W3Counter Feature Comparison

The great news for WordPress users is that there’s a WordPress plugin which integrates perfectly with your blog. Once installed you can check your stats directly from your WordPress admin area.

Unfortunately, W3 Counter free accounts are limited to 5,000 page views per day (around 150,000 per month). If your blog has a higher level of traffic (most established blogs will) then you will need to pay $9.95 per month, or $39.95 for 6 months, to upgrade to a pro account. Pro accounts allow up to 1 million page views per month and have a lot of advanced features.

Whether the pro account is worth the money depends on how much you like the stats the service provides but since it’s free to sign up you can at least give it a trial run before committing to any monthly payment. I recommend trying it out to see the Feedburner integration and live view options in action :)
