The Evolution of Matt Mullenweg’s Blog

Posted on by in Blog

WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg has always made sure that his personal blog has a fresh and trendsetting design. He recently launched a new design for his blog so I thought it would be fun to look back at how his designs have changed over the last 4 years.

2006

In 2006 Matts blog was located at photomatt.net rather than ma.tt. The design body was fairly plain (as was the norm at the time) but the header was really impressive and rotated photos depending on the page the reader was on.

Matts next design had a more hippie feel to it. The content background pattern was replaced with white which made reading posts easier, thumbnails were enlarged and gravatars were given more focus too.

2009

Designed by Julien Morel and coded by Brian Colinger, the 2009 design was abstract and used a large artistic image header. It was a really unique design and was featured countless times in theme inspiration articles.

2010

A few days ago Matt announced his new summer design. Designed by Nicolò Volpato and coded by Otto, the people behind the 2006 and 2008 designs, the new theme is apparently inspired by the art of Roy Lichtenstein (I initially thought it had been inspired by a comic book).

The design uses TypeKit for fonts instead of relying on images. Therefore the design is faster loading than last years design.

The sidebar colours and the comment area are really beautiful and the footer wave image is impressive too. All in all I think it’s a fantastic design.

Overview

The new design is colourful, easy to read and fun. I was a little disappointed that the new design didn’t take advantage of the new post image header feature though as I’m keen to see how designers incorporate the new feature into new designs.

I hope you have enjoyed looking at the past and present designs of Matt Mullenweg’s Blog. What do you think of Matts latest design?

Thanks,
Kevin

You’re more than welcome Nick. I really love your new design. The alternate colours in the sidebar boxes work really well.

Hi Kevin,
thanks for this post, it feels great to see my 3 designs (2006, 2008 and 2010) featured here. It was a bit like going back in time ;)
