Swat The “Update Available” Fly

Posted on by in WordPress Tutorials

Ever get annoyed by that little information window informing you theres a new WordPress update available? I sure do.

Thank the heavens a proper edit does exist to remove the update notification from WordPress and stop the update news from appearing at all. The method to remove the related feature is quick and simple, however it does involve editing your WordPress blog or site’s source files; so before continuing it would be a good idea to backup important files- just in case.

The file to be edited is your “Functions.php” file within the directory of your active theme located in the following directory:

DO NOT edit the “Functions.php” file in your “/wp-includes” directory

The following code can be added anywhere in the file just make sure not to break up any existing code:

remove_action('wp_version_check', 'wp_version_check');
remove_action('admin_init', '_maybe_update_core');
add_filter('pre_transient_update_core', create_function( '$a', "return null;"));

There you have it! The message will no longer appear when a WordPress update is available for download.

Just make sure you check regularly for updates on your own as an out of date WordPress install poses serious security risks.

FYI, the instructions above appear to be outdated. I am running a v3.1 site and it didn’t have any effect. I googled it and found another solution which worked.

add_filter( ‘pre_site_transient_update_core’, create_function( ‘$a’, “return null;” ) );
