When we last checked in with WPZoom founder Pavel Ciorici, we talked about the success of the WordPress theme site’s Magazine-style offering. Ciorici also pointed out, “There is a very high demand for video themes for WordPress,” proving that a multimedia experience is king. Now, we know all about what has made WPZoom so popular.
As WordPress has evolved, so too have the methods users have employed to visit websites. For example, the explosion of mobile devices has caused sites like WPZoom to adapt. How have they done so? By introducing responsive themes. If you haven’t heard of the term before, responsive themes are those that resize on various mobile devices and screen sizes. They’re all the rage, so we thought it would be appropriate to talk about this growing area of the WordPress theme market.
WPHub: Talk about the increased use of mobile devices and whether responsive themes are becoming more important to WPZoom.
Pavel Ciorici: That’s a very interesting question. There are many tools available right now that give users a better mobile experience, like responsive themes, and lots of people are interested in them. But, responsive themes are not very interesting to some people, especially users with less knowledge about web development. Sometimes, people ask for responsive themes without knowing that a specific theme was released before the responsiveness trend started.
It’s also difficult for us to update old themes to look good on mobile devices. However, all of the themes we have released this year are responsive and adapt very well to any mobile device. Most of the time, I feel that we are forced to make a theme responsive just to keep up with competitors because a good-looking theme on a mobile device does not always mean and a good user experience.
What I mean by that is that people tend to visit websites on desktop computers first. Sometimes, visiting the same site on a mobile device can be confusing for them when they see a different layout or elements arranged in a different order than they’re used to.
WPHub: How much of an increase have you seen from users e-mailing about responsive themes? Why did you decide to start supporting responsive themes in the first place? Was it because of customer demand or because competitors started doing so?
Pavel Ciorici: I’d say that every 10th e-mail we receive asks whether a theme is responsive or not. One of the main reasons we make our themes responsive in the first place is to keep up with our competition; this is a very important factor when a user decides whether to buy a WordPress theme.
WPHub: How much extra work goes into creating a responsive theme versus a regular theme?
Pavel Ciorici: I can’t say that making a theme responsive takes a lot of time. Usually, we do this at the end of the design process and it can consist of about 5% of the overall time spent.
WPHub: Thanks for your insight into responsive themes. In your opinion, what makes for a good theme design in general? What would attract you, personally, to a certain theme over another in terms of its design?
Pavel Ciorici: I see themes as a starting point for creating a website, so I think a perfect theme should have a simple design and offer a flexible structure. In many cases, users prefer an out-of-box working theme to look exactly as it did in a demo instead of having to tweak it and play with dozens of settings. In my opinion, a good theme design means fewer complex elements, fewer image elements, and no gradients.
