I’m sure you are aware of the .htaccess file; the file which can be used for a number of functions such as making your URLs SEO friendly, password protecting a directory or redirecting traffic. You’ve probably heard of the robots.txt file; the file which is used to tell search engines which directories they can and cannot index.
Have you ever heard of the humans.txt file though? Don’t worry,I hadn’t heard of it either. The Humans.txt file is a new standard that many website owners are adding to the root of their website. The file is used to inform users basic information about the people who run the website.
You can place as much or as little information about yourself in your humans.txt file. You can also add an author tag to the head area of your website using:
<link type="text/plain" rel="author" href="http://www.yoursite.com/humans.txt" />
/* TEAM */ Your title: Your name. Site: email, link to a contact form, etc. Twitter: your Twitter username. Location: City, Country. [...] /* THANKS */ Name: name or url [...] /* SITE */ Last update: YYYY/MM/DD Standards: HTML5, CSS3,.. Components: Modernizr, jQuery, etc. Software: Software used for the development
Humans TXT WordPress Plugin
A useful WordPress plugin has been created that allows you to easily add a humans.txt to your website. The plugin lets you set which user groups can edit the humans.txt file and you can also add an author link tag to the head area.
Numerous WordPress variables can be used to insert information into your template and the shortcode [humanstxt] can be used to insert a link to the file into your content.
Is it worth adding a humans.txt file to your website?
When I first came across the Humans TXT website, I must admit I thought to myself ‘What’s the point?’, as surely all the information you need to tell people is placed on your about page.
Having looked into the standard more, I can see the benefits of using it. If more websites like Google start adopting it we may find more uses for it. For now, it’s a useful way of quickly finding relevant information about a website quickly and easily.
