Desire – A Free Minimal WordPress Theme

Posted on by in Blog

Desire is a two column minimalist theme created by Nischal Maniar. The minimal and non-interfering layout seems perfect for any type of blog, be it a personal one or a magazine website.

Introduction:

At first look, Desire does not seem to do much beyond what Twenty Ten already has to offer – plain white background and neatly crafted typography that soothes the eyes. However, the Home Page Slider does catch attention, and so do the Sidebar tabs. Desire, by default, hardly has any loud graphics whatsoever, but you can customize it to suit your needs.

Major Features:

Desire has three styles of layout and offers support for custom header and custom background (along with custom logo image for the blog). The theme also boasts of flexible width, tabbed sidebar content, Post bookmarks and Post slideshow as well as automatic thumbnail generation for posts. Desire is translation ready, and French and German translations are also available but since I’m fluent neither in French nor in German, I can’t comment on how good (or bad) the translations are! If you are a French or German speaker, feel free to let us know about the translations in comments below.

The Desire theme comes with its own Theme Options Page, that lets you customize several aspects of the theme. For instance, you can choose the default font (only three options are available, though), or specify the slide show elements and options. There are separate fonts available for the Blog Name (or Site Title), and you can choose between two-column, single-column or traditional layout for your blog.

Since it is a flexible width theme, you can manually specify the width of the sidebar (maximum width of 400px and minimum of 200px; 250px being the default value). The Theme Options panel also lets you add Adsense code to fit in the sidebar (sadly, no ad slots are allocated adjacent to the header or in the footer area and you’ll have to do that manually, if you so need). And last, in the Theme Options page, you can also upload a custom Logo (maximum file size of 150 KB). You will literally need to upload the image, even if it already exists in your Media files. I couldn’t find an automated in the Theme Options page to specify a URL to the logo.

Verdict:

Desire is a fresh theme with focus on the content. It is swift and minimal, with flexible width being a welcome tone. The theme in itself has an air of no-nonsense approach surrounding it, and if you prefer having a minimal look and feel for your blog, Desire might just serve your purpose!
