WordPress For iOS Verson 3.6 Released

in Blog

More and more, WordPress website owners are turning to smart phones and tablet computers to run their online businesses or blogs while on the go. This reality has prompted a growing amount of use when it comes to WordPress for iOS – a platform that is compatible with iPhones and iPads. Over the weekend, WordPress for iOS Version 3.6 was released; featuring a completely redesigned User Interface, a method for quickly posting new content via the sidebar, and a bug fix for Tumblr imported blogs. In the iTunes App Store, WordPress for iOS Version 3.6 is marketed as follows: “It’s easy to manage your WordPress blog or site from your iOS device. With WordPress for iOS, you can moderate comments, create or edit posts and pages, view stats, and add images or videos with ease. All you need is a WordPress.com blog or a self-hosted WordPress.org site running 3.1 or higher.”

WP for iOS

Jorge Bernal published a blog post late last week which breaks down all that’s new in the latest release of the software by saying that the principle aim of the update was to create a great user experience. “Previously, if you’d never before used the app, or if you were new to WordPress in general, the app might not have felt very welcoming when first getting started. With this update we change all that,” said Bernal. “Now, when you launch the app for the first time we showcase what’s possible. If you don’t have a site yet, now it’s easier than ever to create a new WordPress.com site straight from the app, and if you already have a WordPress site, just enter your username, password, and site address and you’ll be ready to go. If you have Jetpack installed, you’ll be prompted for your WordPress.com credentials to get access to Stats and notifications.”

Post Shortcuts & Other Enhancements

In the latest release, there is a Post Shortcut within the sidebar in the form of a + sign located within the sidebar. Clicking on this will take the website admin or author directly to the Editor where he/she can begin work immediately. This function will work for both posts and pages.

WordPress for iOS also boasts quicker Notifications, which have been optimized and now show Emoji for all the known WordPress emoticons. More translations – 12 in all – have been added. These include Danish, Korean and Russian. The addition of new languages is a great tool for those who do not speak English as a first language. This version of WordPress for iOS comes a short time before the upcoming launch of WordPress 3.6; which has been delayed in recent weeks with the custom post formats removed and placed inside a plugin.

Additional Info

Bernal recommends visiting WordPress.org Mobile to keep up with all the latest news surrounding WordPress and its focus on mobile devices. So far this year, those that work with WordPress have redoubled their efforts to cater to the mobile market like never before as more users worldwide switch at least a portion of their overall time on WordPress sites to devices like the iPhone or iPad when away from their traditional home office or corporate desktop.

One user who goes by the name of Nick inquired about several other features and when they would be released with WordPress for iOS, including the Rich Text Editor, improved media management and app sharing from third party services. If you are a current user of WordPress for iOS and have made the change to Version 3.6, we would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave a comment below with feedback on the most recent release for iPhones and iPads.
