WordPress 3.3 Released

in Blog

A few hours ago Matt Mullenweg announced the long awaited release of WordPress 3.3. Since I previewed 3.3 in October, we have seen another 2 beta releases (4 in total) and 3 release candidates.

All of the great features that were introduced when the first beta was released in the first half of October have been tweaked and hundreds of bugs were fixed.

New features include:

  • Fly out admin menus to help with menu crowding in the admin bar.
  • Improved admin bar (i.e. the bar at the top of every page).
  • Pointers that allow developers to place information boxes in areas where you will need help.
  • An improved media uploader that allows you to drag and drop files into the uploader.
  • The %postname% permalink performance issue has been addressed.
  • Improved co-editing support.
  • New Tumblr importer.
  • Improved dashboard experience and touch support for iPad and other tablets.

A quick preview of this latest version of WordPress, named ‘Sonny’ in honor of the great jazz saxophonist Sonny Stitt, can be seen in the video below.

I encourage you all to upgrade to 3.3 when you have time. As always, make sure you have backed up all your database and all of your files just in case something goes wrong in the installation process and you need to revert back to the last working version.

Good luck,

Just today upgraded all my sites and looks great until now. By the way, I like the new admin bar.

It’s surprising that plugin developers were having problems as WordPress made a point over the last release candidates to encourage plugin developers to update their code.

Viz Fact Unnecessary steps? Can you expand on this. I can’t think of anything that is more difficult in the new version.

@[285639173280:274:WP Mods] I have to use RAW HTML to add images, the update added multiple new unnecessary steps to my blogging process. I only wish I could just add a simple image and select which image gets featured. I swear I hate wordpress now.

I’m getting red flags from a number of people about losing plugin functionality . . . here’s a sample from an experienced developer:

When I updated and tried to update some plugins I received the following: Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access /dev/wp-admin/update.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

And I’m seeing more “caution” and backup warnings in the wp.org forums.

I’m going to be testing this puppy before I think about updating critical sites.

I already upgraded all my sites and love the WordPress 3.3. It looks very slick. I really like the new admin bar & drag and drop uploader.

Just FYI – Popup domination is not working with 3.3. Make sure to disable that plugin, before upgrading to 3.3 !

I’m surprised you’ve had any problems. I’ve been using 3.3 on my test blog for a few months with no problems. What exactly is going wrong?

Well try it on a test blog first. I hate I ever clicked update. (for wordprss 3.3)

Its causing me tons of problems and added tons of news steps to my process. I guess its because that click and drag crap doesn’t work. Now I have to stop writing my post, add the image as a media file, then add the image with raw HTML code. The crap doesn’t work. At least not for me.

The new uploader looks pretty sweet; it’ll finally allow me to take advantage of my dual monitor setup. However, I’m going to watch the comment thread on my theme for a day or two before upgrading…
