WordPress 10th Anniversary Approaches

in Blog

It really doesn’t seem like it was that long ago, but on May 27th, 2003, Matt Mullenweg (founder of Automattic) and Mike Little branched off b2/cafelog and formed the open source blogging tool we’ve all come to love: WordPress. Most of us (if we were even aware of WordPress at the time) never could have imagined how much of a phenomenon the platform would eventually become. Today, WordPress is enjoyed by millions worldwide and has truly established a global reach through its user friendly interface that allows non-expert webmasters and expert coders to take advantage of quite possibly the most useful tool on the Internet. May 27th falls on a Monday this year, and WordPress.org has already launched its 10th anniversary promo by offering WordPress Tin/Aluminum Birthday T-Shirts at cost – for $10 US Dollars.

WordPress 10th Anniversary

WordPress T Shirts

As you read this article, you are most likely aware that WordPress is currently used to manage an extremely wide range of websites; everything from e-Commerce, blogging and Tumblr-style setups to business, real estate, education, social networking, multimedia and much more. In an April 23rd blog post, WordPress.org contributor Jen Mylo wrote, “In honor of the upcoming 10th anniversary celebrations, we’ve put a special 10th anniversary t-shirt in the swag store at cost — $10 per shirt plus shipping. They’ll be on sale at this price until the anniversary on May 27, and they’ll start shipping out the week of April 29.

Some people who are planning parties or who organize meetups are already talking about doing group orders to save on shipping costs, which is a great idea — just make sure you allow enough shipping time. If you’re not sure if the tees could make it to you in time on your side of the world, use the contact options at the bottom of the store page to ask about shipping times. If they can’t reach you in time and you want to have a local printer do some for your group, we’ll post the vector file on the wp10 site within the next week (and this post will get updated accordingly).”

The official WordPress Store currently offers well over a dozen items. There are smart phone cases, toddler merchandise, hooded sweatshirts, jackets, long-sleeve shirts, and even holiday ornaments to decorate when the time comes.

Next WordPress Release

We’re also anxiously awaiting the next release of WordPress; which is slated for official release at the end of this month. Lead Developer Mark Jaquith and his team already released the first Beta version earlier this month with special attention to post formats, auto save features, theme compatibility, post locking, revisions, and navigation menus. To date, there have been more than 150 contributors to WordPress 3.6.

Although production was moved back in order to ensure a more secure, easy to use end product, the lack of further setback news has us believing that we will indeed see a new WordPress version launch in a week’s time.

WordPress Versatility

If you are an inexperienced WordPress user who happens to own a website, you would be well served in many cases to download the software and give it a try. One of the great things about WordPress is that it is highly compatible with premium themes and plugins that greatly enhance functionality without ever having to go into the Editor and work with code.

Some of the main positives of using a WordPress theme is the ability to implement responsive layouts, use multiple formats, integrate social media, insert custom widgets, and have your website work correctly on today’s popular browsers such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari.

As the 10th Anniversary date draws close, we will continue to keep our readers informed on the latest news surrounding parties and events.
