Stop People Stealing Your Content With Protection WP

in Blog

I have spoke about ways you can reduce spam in the past. Today I would like to quickly show you a simple plugin for WordPress to discourage content scrapers called Protection WP.

The plugin tries to stop scrapers in 3 ways. It allows you to:

  • Disable right-click
  • Disable text selection
  • Disable your RSS feed

Protection WP WordPress Plugin

I would prefer to use alternative methods to combat content scrapers as you are bound to annoy loyal readers by disabling the right click on your blog. Additionally, if you really wanted to stop people stealing your content via RSS feeds, all you would have to do is change your feed from full to excerpt. Disabling your RSS feed completely seems a bit overkill to me.

I’m sure that there are many people who would find this useful though I encourage you to look at alternative methods first before resorting to using a plugin this extreme :)

Good luck,

Dean, please be aware how restrictive this plugin is. It could be argued that it does your site more harm than good.

Fantastic. I have suffered from scrapers for ages and anything that slows them down is good by me. :)

I have to agree. It’s overkill. Though I wanted to post about the plugin as I covered other alternatives in my previous article about spam.

There are people out there who will do anything to stop people stealing their content. It can be counter productive in my opinion.

This plugin’s proposed solution to copyright theft seems very backwards to me. It’s like opening a store and keeping everything in glass cases out of arm’s reach, just to stop thieves from getting anything. You can’t punish the masses for the actions of the few. Thieves need to be dealt with on a case by case basis, while loyal readers enjoy your content as it was meant to be enjoyed.
