Design Chemical have released another great social media plugin for WordPress. Social Network Tabs is a jQuery plugin that discretely places social media icons at the left or right hand side of your page.
13 social networks are supported including Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Digg, YouTube, Pinterest and StumbleUpon. An icon is displayed for each social media website you enable in the settings area.
When you click on an icon a box slides out smoothly to reveal the full social media box. Certain social media websites are updated in real time. For example, if a visitor clicks on the Twitter icon, new tweets scroll down whenever you update your account.
The latest posts from your Facebook fan page can be shown as well as a social box which shows everyone who has liked your page. The Pinterest option is really cool, showing the latest images you have uploaded to your Pinterest account.
Configuring which social media services are displayed is really easy. For each service there is an on/off button and a simple settings area that lets you add your ID or username. Different social media services have different settings but most allow you to change the title and set how many items are displayed in the stream. The order of social media services can be rearranged easily by dragging and dropping icons in the order you want.
The settings tab lets you change where the icons are displayed on your site. The offset distance from your content can be determined and it can be displayed at the left or right and either at the top, middle or bottom. Links can also be opened in a new window and the box can be closed automatically if the user clicks away from the area.
The default colours of unopened tabs can be changed easily in the styling area. The colour of each social network website can be changed too though I imagine most people won’t change this as they match the corresponding service e.g. light blue for Twitter, dark blue for Facebook and red for Pinterest.
Tabs can be displayed on your home page, pages, posts page (e.g. blog template), posts, categories and archives.
I was impressed with Social Network Tabs. It has support for all the major social media services, the box pops out smoothly and streams are updated in real time. To really appreciate the plugin though I recommend viewing the plugin demo.
A regular license for Social Network Tabs retails for $10 from CodeCanyon (a jquery version is also available for $6 if you want to use the plugin on a non-WordPress website). The plugin has great documentation built into the plugin though most features are pretty self-explanatory. It also comes with the original Photoshop PSD files for icons if you want to change how everything looks. All in all, another great social media plugin from Design Chemical.
