One-on-One with ThemeFuse Co-Founder Dimi Baitanciuc: Part 1

Offering single themes from $49 per title and a subscription plan starting at $17 per month, ThemeFuse has grown into a well-known name. We’ve reviewed 20 of ThemeFuse’s works here on WPHub and if you check out the selection on ThemeFuse’s website, you’ll see just how clean, yet vibrant a WordPress theme can be. WPHub sat down with ThemeFuse Co-Founder Dimi Baitanciuc to talk about the two-and-a-half year old company’s success, which is due in part to its niche theme design.

In the first part of our four-part interview, we’ll talk about the founding of ThemeFuse and see what themes have made the company a household name. We’ll also learn why more general themes could actually inhibit a theme shop’s growth.

WPHub: Thanks for joining us. When did you found ThemeFuse? What was your motivation for getting the company started and how did you seek to differentiate yourself from the competition?

themefuse dimi baitanciucDimi Baitanciuc: We started ThemeFuse almost two-and-a-half years ago when the WordPress theme industry was a very different place. Back then, we didn’t have our own WordPress theme shop, but only posted them on specialized marketplaces like ThemeForest. We did very well there, but we always felt we wanted more – our own place where we could really express our creativity. So, we launched ThemeFuse on December 6, 2010.

The thing that differentiates us from other WordPress theme shops is the original design style (at least in our eyes) and niche ideas for our themes. For example, we try to cover niche templates like hotels, coffee shops, medical offices, sports magazines, and lawyer offices themes instead of doing the same run-of-the-mill, generic templates that you see for sale on many competing shops.

The problem with generic themes is that, although powerful and versatile, they won’t attract buyers at first sight because they don’t look anything like what the client wants or expects to see. But when people look at our niche themes, they already see their future website because our templates are designed and developed for the exact needs of those customers in that industry.

WPHub: Can you tell us about your background prior to ThemeFuse? When did you find WordPress in the first place and when did it turn from a hobby into a career?

Dimi Baitanciuc: There are four co-founders at ThemeFuse and we have all worked in web design for different local web studios. At a certain point in time, we decided to start something on our own and make a name for ourselves mainly because we felt the WordPress theme industry was in its infancy and lacking in quality and originality. I’m not saying we have filled that gap yet, but we are working on it.

Nowadays, our team has 12 members, which might seem fairly big for a startup, but we’re trying to keep that number as small as possible. We don’t want to grow our team for the sake of a “bigger is better” philosophy. We feel that sometimes keeping the team rather small is the right thing to do. We hire people only when the situation really commands it and we like the fact that in smaller teams, everyone feels like one big family.

WPHub: Tell us about your themes. Which ones are your best selling and why do you think they have become so popular?

Dimi Baitanciuc:
The top three selling themes for us are:

  • Welcome Inn, a WordPress theme for hotels, motels, and B&Bs
  • Medica, a template for doctors, dentists, and medical staff
  • Envision, a WordPress theme for businesses, corporations, and internet startups

These themes are usually selling in the hundreds each month, so that’s obviously not a bad figure for us. Also, our HomeQuest Real Estate theme and Voyage Travel Agency theme are both very complex and powerful with lots of great functionality. It shows that these areas are very popular even though their price is the least accessible in our entire range. But, the work put into them and the complex functionality they come with out of the box are worth the higher price tag.
