Minimatica is a modern minimalist free theme created by Daniel of OneDesigns. It features an image slider by default on the front page itself, thereby making it suited for photo blogging and online portfolios. It also has an optional blog view, which you can bring to the fore using Theme Options page, if you so desire. But all in all, Minimatica is foremost a photobloggers’ theme. Before we forget, it is licenced under GPL.
Minimatica has two view modes: a Gallery View that displays the images (in a very beautiful manner, I must add), and a classical Blog view that shows posts. You can set which view is shown when viewer selects components such as tags, categories, etc. Also, if you so desire, you can set Gallery as the overall default view, and specify one particular category (say, ‘Articles’) as Blog.
Apart from two separate views, Minimatica also has support for post thumbnails, post formats, etc. Post thumbnails can be attached to both simple blog posts or even in Gallery view. Gallery posts can also have a lightbox for full screen preview, if needed.
In addition, Minimatica offers native support for HTML5 Audio and Video playback. If, however, the user’s browser does not yet support HTML5, the theme also has a fall back mechanism for Flash Player. Posts categorized as ‘Asides’ can also be displayed in a widget in the sidebar.
Minimatica is indeed a great theme for photo blogs, online portfolios, travel blogs and podcasts. Its clean and minimal design along with eye-candy effects add to its curriculum vitae. If you own a photo blog or share images, audio and other media on your blog, you should definitely give Minimatica a try. Rest assured, you will not be disappointed!
