The bbPress Forum Software received a major update Monday in the form of a new version release (Version 2.3). The upgrade includes a number of improvements that range from WordPress 3.6 compatibility to a new statistics shortcode. Developer John James Jacoby posted a blog entry over the weekend outlining the new features that come with the latest release of bbPress. “It comes with over 150 individual fixes and enhancements since 2.2, and is a safe update to any site running bbPress 2.0 or higher,”Jacoby wrote.”
New bbPress Features
As mentioned above, one of the most important upgrades to bbPress is the fact that it is already WordPress 3.6 compatible; an extremely important consideration when taking into account that the all new version of WordPress (a project led by developer Mark Jaquith) is due out by the end of the month. This means that forum-heavy websites will be able to immediately integrate the new software seamlessly without having to wait for yet another release. bbPress 2.3 also comes with a Forum Wide Search function that will allow members and visitors to search for unique, detailed data and have it register in order to view archived content that may be hidden from interested parties otherwise. Performance and caching enhancements mean that your site will ultimately run more smoothly on bbPress, plus the new version includes Vanilla, SimplePress and Mingle importers.
The software also comes with improved theme compatibility with new template-stack API as well as an enhanced BuddyPress Group Forum, Activity Streams, and Profiles integration. Roles and Capabilities have been reworked, as have the code documentation and sub-action execution order to fix user/login issues. Finally, there is a new Statistics shortcode that has been tacked on to the latest release. Jacoby gave credit to a number of developers who are responsive for the latest release. “Major props to the following individuals for helping make 2.3 a success: alexvorn2, alex-ye, anointed, boonebgorges, cnorris23, daveshine, DJPaul, duck_, ericlewis, fartlek, jaredatch, jmdodd, Kaspace, mamaduka, markmcwilliams, mercime, mesayre, michelwppi, mouratidis, MZAWeb, nacin, netweb, Omicron7, pavelevap, ryangannon, scribu, schrepel, sorich87, tungdo, vibol, Viper007Bond, westi, and wonderboymusic,” he said.
The free bbPress download can be used in conjunction with a number of plugins to get the most out of your WordPress website forum. These include bbPress Topics For Posts, WP User Avatar, Pushover Notifications For WordPress, bbPress Stay Checked, bbPress Simple Advert Units and more than 100 others.
On the official Description Page, bbPress asks, “Have you ever been frustrated with forum or bulletin board software that was slow, bloated and always got your server hacked? bbPress is focused on ease of integration, ease of use, web standards, and speed. We’re keeping things as small and light as possible while still allowing for great add-on features through WordPress’s extensive plugin system. What does all that mean? bbPress is lean, mean, and ready to take on any job you throw at it.”
The bbPress philosophy is based on open source coding, utilizing less code in general (less is more), simplicity, speed, security, and putting the users first. Front end editing capabilities make the software a favorite among website administrators who are able to quickly modify, delete and rearrange content without ever having to visit the back-end Options Panel or Dashboard.
