I originally made a note to mention maintenance mode plugins when I was drafting this post but then didn’t cover it as I didn’t use one myself. I’ve edited the post with some links to some good maintenance plugins you can use.

Thanks Kevin, I know these will be useful to a lot of people. I quite like theme testdrive, I’ve used it in the past. – I also like to use Maintenance mode plugin when I’m switching to a different theme or doing some changes.I’ve tweeted this, I think it will be quite useful to others changing design, cheers!

I think that a maintenance plugin can be more useful, even though the website would be inaccessible to others. At least you would be able to work without having to worry that something might go wrong.
