I am pleased to announce that the WordPress forums have returned to WP Mods. When WP Mods initially launched in early 2010 we integrated the stand alone version of bbPress into the site. I was keen to use bbPress as it was created by WordPress developers Automattic and was one of the few forum scripts that integrated well with WordPress.
I was never truly happy with it though. The script is far too basic and lacks many community features that I believe are essential. I decided to remove the forums from WP Mods earlier this year due to these reasons and due to a problem the forum had with spam (I had to manually delete spam every week!). Since that time I have been on the lookout for the right forum solution for WP Mods.
The script I finally chose was xenForo; a modern forum script from the original developers of vBulletin that is fast, feature rich and social media friendly. I integrated the forum here at the weekend and last night emailed newsletter subscribers with the opportunity of signing up before it was officially launched. I was originally planning on changing the design a bit more and adding additional functionality before launching, though I would prefer the forum to grow organically and react to requests from members.
This week I will explain my reasons for choosing this script and why I decided against using the bbPress plugin :)
The WordPress forums will be a place :
- To get help with modifying your website; whether it be changing your design or integrating a new feature into your site.
- For WordPress users to hang out and discuss WordPress related topics with like minded bloggers and webmasters.
- To discuss the latest WordPress themes and plugins.
See you there :)
