In Part 1 of our interview with WPZoom founder Pavel Ciorici, we recapped the formation of one of the largest WordPress theme sites out there. To give you a quick recap, WPZoom began as a traditional affiliate site, but quickly morphed into theme design and development. Now, Ciorici is based in Moldova and heads up a company consisting of six people.
In Part 2 of our interview, we picked his brain on WPZoom’s theme library and learned why his company has actually elected to retire several of its active themes. We’ll also learn what WPZoom’s top-selling theme is and figure out what has made that theme such a rousing success.
WPHub: We understand that WPZoom’s Magazine theme category has been a highly popular niche.
Pavel Ciorici: We’ve experimented creating themes for different niches, but one of the most successful ones was, and continues to be, Magazine-styled themes. We love creating them and we are happy to be recognized as having one of largest collections of such themes.
WPHub: Why have Magazine-style themes been so popular? Why have they sold so well?
Pavel Ciorici: These themes show people that WordPress is not just a blogging platform. This also helped migrate a lot of users from other popular CMS solutions like Joomla.
WPHub: How difficult is it to create new iterations of WordPress themes? How hard is it to come up with a new theme you don’t already have? We think we’d quickly run out of ideas!
Pavel Ciorici: It’s a little difficult to keep creating new and unique themes, especially when you already have a large number of themes in your collection. Furthermore, the market is already overfilled with themes from many categories. In such cases, we prefer to work with talented designers because they always have creative ideas of new themes and designs to make.
It’s also hard when you want to create a new theme, but you already have a similar one in your collection. To avoid such situations, we decided rather recently to retire several old themes so that we can focus our energy on creating similar themes, but with better code and improvements.
WPHub: Who is involved in creating new themes for WPZoom? We know you have a group of six, so how does that process work?
Pavel Ciorici: Four members of our team are involved in the theme development process here. Two are fully focused on customer support. From time to time, the rest of the team also does customer support in order to have a quick response time to customer questions and concerns.
WPHub: It sounds like your customers are well taken care of. What is your best-selling WordPress theme of all-time and why do you think it has done so well? Are there any stats on its purchase or usage you can share?
Pavel Ciorici: Our best-selling theme is definitely Videozoom. It is a very popular video theme and we never expected it to be so popular, but it seems that there is a very high demand for video themes for WordPress. It is also one of our most frequently viewed themes. This theme has been sold several thousand times.
WPHub: We thought it would be appropriate to talk a little bit about Videozoom, which was launched in 2010 and designed by Oleg Dubinovich. According to WPZoom’s website, “Videozoom is an elegant theme with a neat featured slider, which is ready to play any videos you want to embed into your posts.” Apparently, multimedia themes are king. Videozoom runs $69 or you can access it through WPZoom’s Club Membership.
In Part 3 of our interview with WPZoom founder Pavel Ciorici, we’ll talk about responsive themes, which allow sites to be viewed easily on mobile devices. We’ll also discuss what he feels is the perfect WordPress theme and what he emphasizes when building a new theme.
